Have you downloaded a virtual ton of ebooks from the Internet? Some were free, no doubt, and some cost something, but in either case, certainly the information was valuable or you wouldn’t have ordered them. Right?
Chances are, most of them are in “pdf” format, since that is the most usable format for an ebook. The biggest advantage of a pdf is that it is viewable on all platforms, including MacIntosh, PC and Linux systems.
The other popular format is the Executable, or “exe.” However, those are only viewable on a PC. And many of them cannot be printed. (It’s also a way to protect the content of an ebook, since the exe format is harder to steal.)
Print it
Some people like to print their ebooks so they can read them later, in other surroundings. That’s a nice touch, but be careful you don’t wind up with a new pile of paper in a drawer, either.
Having a print version can be extremely handy, though, as you will be able to highlight passages for later reference, and you can add notes in the margins. (See below for “no-frills printing,” too.)
But there are other ways to enjoy your ebooks that you may not have thought about.
Listen to it
If you don’t care to use up a lot of paper and ink, another way to consume a pdf ebook is to listen to it. Oh… you didn’t know you could do that without special software? Sound is integrated into today’s operating systems, so you’re probably already good to go.
The later versions of pdf readers are all able to play audio of the text. It’s a boring computer voice, and sometimes the words are pronounced “creatively,” but you can play one while you do something else, such as sorting your coaching notes or CDs and DVDs into their respective file boxes. Listening to an ebook frees you from the monitor and lets you relax your eyeballs.
Here’s how to do it in the Adobe PDF Reader:
From the menu bar across the top, click on View, then Read out Loud, then Activate Read Out Loud. Then you need to choose whether to have it read “This Page Only” or the entire document. (You will have to click on View Blonde Girls to get back to this part of the drop down menu.)
If you get tired of listening to the droning voice, you can simply deactivate the Read Out Loud option, or you can click on Pause or Stop. Go back to View / Read Out Loud / Deactivate Read Out Loud.
Also, you need to know that the voice reads absolutely everything, including dashes, minus signs, greater than and less than marks, and other punctuation. So you might want to do this only for text-heavy documents, rather than, say, emails, or documents with calculations or dividing lines all through them.
From the other side of the coin, if you’re an author, and you’d like your readers to be able to listen to your ebooks, sex girls in mind that the pdf reader vocalizes every little mark. So you may want to keep such things at a tight minimum.
Get rid of borders and toolbars
Next, if you want to read the page in a full screen, without all the toolbars, you can choose View / Full Screen Mode, or View / Reading Mode.
If you choose Full Screen Mode, the entire page will show and there will be no toolbar at all. To escape from this mode, just hit the Escape button.
If you choose Reading Mode, the screen goes to full page, but there is the blue bar at the top, along with the basic menu bar, so you can find the - sign, the maximize box, and the closing X.
To return to the familiar default view, go to View and deselect Reading Mode.
No-Frills printing
Another thing you can do with a pdf that you can’t do with the exe is print the text only. If you want to remove graphics and formatting, simply choose Edit / Select All, then go back to Edit / Copy, or Edit / Copy to Clipboard. Then open a new text document, such as Word Pad, Note Pad, or other text file, and select Paste. You will get the text, the whole text, and nothing but the text.
This can help you save paper if you prefer to print just the content, without all the colors, special formats and pictures, and you want a no-nonsense, no-frills version to read.
I’ve reduced my paper usage by more than 75% in some cases by eliminating all graphics and formatting. Most ebook authors like to enhance the appearance of their products with graphic elements, unusual fonts, lots of “white space” to make reading easier, and narrow text columns.
There is nothing wrong with that, and it’s even a desirable way to publish an ebook, but if you are pushing your resource limits and need to use just the basics, try the no-frills approach. Just be aware that you may have to edit it a bit (such as adding some spacing) to make it readable. A huge block of plain text is very hard to wade through.
And don’t forget about the zoom feature. You can make the page larger or smaller by clicking on minus or plus next to the percentage box.
